Therapeutic Alternative Program (aka TAP)

About the Program

The TAP Program is designed to meet the needs of students who require an alternative to the general educational setting because of a diagnosis of mental illness.  TAP strives to provide an environment, which nurtures growth, empowerment, and friendships through support, skill building, educational challenges, and community experiences.

In order to accomplish these goals, the TAP Program makes use of the following components: an adolescent support group which meets daily with a licensed clinical social worker; a small group instructional setting taught by special education professionals; opportunities for personal growth and enrichment provided through such avenues as community work placements, cultural events, physical and recreational activities, social skills development: and a parent support group assisted by the TAP social worker.

Students are admitted to the TAP program through a referral process, which is overseen by the Director of Special Services and the Secondary Coordinator of Special Services with input from the TAP staff.  Students who have been in the Extra Support Program at the MTA Middle School may be appropriately placed in this setting.
